History of Gobustan

In the Middle Ages, different nations lived in the territory of Gobustan. Castles, caravanserais and other buildings were built here. Gobustan was an important trade center on the Silk Road. In the 19th century, Gobustan was incorporated into the Russian Empire. During this period, the first archaeological researches were conducted here.
In the 20th century, Gobustan became a popular tourist destination. Museums were opened here, tourist routes were drawn, hotels were built. Today, the Gobustan National Historical-Artistic Reserve is a unique open-air museum that tells about the history of Azerbaijan from ancient times to the present day.
