Sumgait, the industrial center of the country, is located on a plain on the northwest coast of the Caspian Sea. The territory of the administrative district is 9495 hectares of the territory of the Absheron peninsula. It has a sunny, dry subtropical, and semi-desert climate. The Sumgait River passes through the city. Due to the semi-desert climate, the river cannot reach the sea. The lowest air temperature is -13 °C in January, and the warmest temperature is +40 °C in August. The average annual air temperature is +14 °C. In summer, the temperature of the soil cover rises to +60 °C. The Samur-Absheron canal flows from the south of the city. The channel flows into the Jeyranbatan reservoir.

Today, Sumgait is the modern industrial center of Azerbaijan. The economic structure of the city includes chemical and petrochemical, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machine building, electric power, food, and light industry, and construction materials production enterprises. Most of the existing heavy industrial enterprises in the city have been reconstructed on the basis of modern technology.
