The ancient settlements around Shusha, including the Shusha cave on the famous Cidir plain, prove that these places are one of the oldest human camps in Azerbaijan. During the archeological excavations carried out in the Shusha cave camp in the 70s of the XX century, stone tools belonging to the Paleolithic period were found here.
Founded in 1752 by the Karabakh Khan Penahali, Shusha has numerous historical monuments and was home to many prominent scientists, intellectuals, and cultural icons.
National Leader Heydar Aliyev called Shusha "a holy city, fortress, and monument" not only for the people of Shusha but for all Azerbaijanis. Located at an altitude of 1300-1600 meters above sea level, Shusha is also distinguished by its natural beauty. Known for its healing springs, the city was one of the most visited cities in the region during the Soviet era.
Surrounded by forests and numerous promenades in the southern part of the Horse Plain, it has hosted horse races, festivals, and other sporting events for many years.
