The district center Vartashen (now Oghuz City) had the status of a village until 1961. In 1961-1968, it was given the status of a city-type settlement, and in 1969, the status of a city under the authority of a district. On February 7, 1991, it was changed to the Oghuz region.
The Orthodox Church, the Upper Neighborhood Synagogue, and the Lower Neighborhood Synagogue are located in the city.
In the city, carpet growing and tobacco farming have developed, besides, food industry enterprises and an asphalt factory are active.
