Nakhchivan, one of the oldest and largest cities of Azerbaijan and the East, is the administrative center of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. It is located on the right bank of Nakhchivanchay, at a distance of 560 kilometers from Baku.
According to folk etymology, Nakhchivan means "Naqshi-Jahan" - decoration of the world. According to legend, Nakhchivan is associated with Prophet Noah. Noah's ark, which saved his people from the global flood, came ashore here, and therefore it is considered the area where Noah came out. Noah's ark touched the mountain peaks of the Lesser Caucasus three times before reaching land, and one of them - Ağrıdag - split into two parts.
Medieval French travelers Pierre Chardin and Dubois de Montper, and English traveler Porter wrote that Nakhchivan is a beautiful city with preserved ancient architectural monuments.
Yusuf Ibn Kuseyir (Atababa dome), Mumina-Khatun tomb, and the portal of the minaret JUMA Mosque of the great architect Ajami Ibn Abubakr Nakhchivani of the 12th century have survived to our time. It is believed that by creating the Mausoleum of Momina-Khatun, Ajami created the image of the era.
The Carpet Museum, Literature Museum, and History Museum operate in the city. There are many historical monuments in the city - architectural complex Imamzadeh, Juma Mosque, Zaviya Mosque, "Pirgamiş", "Khan House", Ismail Khan Bath, Yusif Ibn Kuseyir Mausoleum, Momina-Khatin Mausoleum, etc. is being protected.
