The city is located 210 km from Baku. In 1952, the district received the status of a subordinate city. The city is one of the regions with the largest population.
At the entrance of the city, the low hills attract attention. During the archaeological excavations carried out in this area, a hand mill made of granite, jars made of clay, tools of the Eneolithic period, and household items were found.
The city has been named after the Azerbaijani writer Jalil Mammadguluzade since 1967.
Jalilabad Museum of History and Local History operates in the city. The museum building consists of one floor. Currently, there are 4810 exhibits in the museum.
