On August 22, 1819, the first German colony in Azerbaijan - Yelenendorf (now Goygol) settlement was founded here. Helenendorf was founded by a community from the Kingdom of Württemberg. The migration of Germans to the Caucasus began in 1817 with the consent of the Russian Tsar. Later, several more German settlements were established in the region. In 1938, the settlement was named Khanlar, and in 1941, by order of Stalin, the Germans were deported to Kazakhstan. In 2008, the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted a decision to name Khanlar district Goygol.
